This novel is set in 1873 at 124 Bluestone Road in Cincinnati, where Sethe, a formerly enslaved woman who escaped from the Kentucky farm called Sweet Home, lives with her daughter Denver in a house haunted by a baby's angry ghost. The arrival of Paul D, another Sweet Home survivor, disturbs that occupancy; then a young woman who calls herself Beloved comes and claims the household. Through memory the book returns to the farm, to Sethe's flight, and to the act by which she tried to keep her children from being taken back. It is a story of slavery's afterlife in one family and one house.
