Synopsis
First published in 1962, this James Bond novel is narrated by Vivienne Michel, a young Canadian woman whose earlier affairs have left her working alone at a motel in the Adirondacks. Two gangsters arrive to burn the place for insurance; Bond appears as a guest on the road and is pulled into the siege. The book spends much of its length on Vivienne's past before the thriller plot starts. It is an outlier in the series: a first-person crime story that Bond enters late, not a globetrotting mission from M.
