Synopsis
First published in 1963, this novel sends Alec Leamas, a tired British intelligence officer, out of Berlin after his network collapses. He plays the part of a drunken defector so that the Circus can reach Mundt, a senior East German officer, with help from the idealistic Liz Gold. The operation moves through London bedsits, a Dutch beach, and prisons and hearings in the East. The book is a Cold War spy novel about expendable agents and official lies, not an adventure of gadgets.
