Synopsis
First issued in 1965 and later revised, this history re-examines the Spanish Inquisition as an institution of the crown rather than as a uniquely fanatical machine. Kamen follows its founding under Ferdinand and Isabella, its procedures against conversos and later Moriscos and Protestants, censorship, and the gap between legend and the surviving trial records. He places tribunals in local society and in European comparison. The book is a scholarly institutional history, not a catalogue of torture and not a novel of one heretic.
