The Spanish Civil War

By Hugh Thomas · 2014

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

First published in 1961, this narrative history follows Spain from the collapse of the monarchy and the Second Republic through the military rising of 1936 and three years of war. Thomas tracks Republican factions, Franco's Nationalist coalition, the International Brigades, and the intervention of Germany, Italy, and the Soviet Union, with attention to campaigns, terror in the rear, and diplomacy. Battles such as Madrid, the Ebro, and the fall of Catalonia organise the military thread. The book is a political and military history of the war, not a novel of one volunteer.
