This volume reprints the 1609 quarto: one hundred and fifty-four sonnets together with the narrative poem A Lover's Complaint. The sonnets address a fair youth, a rival poet, and a dark mistress, arguing with Time and jealousy. The Complaint that follows is spoken by a weeping young woman beside a river, who tells an older shepherd how a charming youth seduced and abandoned her; the youth's gifts and rhetoric are the poem's subject. The book is a paired lyric sequence and complaint, not a selection from the plays.
