The Song of Songs
Reproduced from a Copy of the First Golden Cockerel Edition
By Ru van Rossem · 1967
Back to CatalogueThis ancient Hebrew sequence of love poems, also called the Song of Solomon, stages a dialogue of desire between a woman and a man, with a chorus of companions. Vineyards, flocks, spices, and the streets of the city supply the imagery as the lovers seek, praise, and lose sight of one another. There is no plotted novel: the book is lyric and dramatic, later read both as human erotic verse and as allegory of divine love. It is a short biblical book of songs, not a narrative history of Israel.
