Patroclus, an exiled prince, is sent to the court of Peleus and forms a bond with Achilles that becomes the centre of both their lives. They train under the centaur Chiron on Mount Pelion, then sail to Troy after Helen's abduction, where Achilles' prowess and pride collide with Agamemnon's command and with the demands of a long siege. The novel is told in Patroclus's voice and stays close to love, honour, and the daily camp rather than to a catalogue of battles. It is a retelling of Homeric material as a personal narrative.
