This travel book records a long solitary journey through China in the mid-1980s, after Thubron had learned Mandarin. He moves by train, bus, bicycle, and on foot from Beijing through coastal and southern cities toward the Burmese border, then inland and northwest across desert to the far end of the Great Wall. Conversations with students, workers, monks, and fellow travelers sit beside temples, factories, and the still-raw memory of the Cultural Revolution. The book is a first-person travel narrative, not a political history of the People's Republic.
