First published in 1864 as one of the Barsetshire novels, this story centres on Lily Dale of the Small House, who loves the handsome civil servant Adolphus Crosbie. He jilts her for Lady Alexandrina de Courcy; Lily's pride and constancy then become the book's problem, while Johnny Eames, a junior clerk who has always loved her, tries to grow into a man who might deserve her. Squire Dale, the Great House, and London offices supply the social field. Plantagenet Palliser appears in a secondary courtship plot. The novel is a study of loyalty after a broken engagement.
