Synopsis
First published in 1952, this detective novel sends Inspector Alan Grant on sick leave by night train to Scotland. In his compartment he finds a dead young man and a newspaper margin scribbled with verse about singing sands. Resting in the Highlands, Grant cannot leave the puzzle alone: the dead man's identity, a vanished companion, and a stretch of coast where sand is said to make a sound. The investigation runs through hotels, islands, and Grant's own frayed nerves. It is a crime novel about a holiday that will not stay quiet.
