Synopsis
First published in 1956, this novel follows Polish children separated in Warsaw during the Second World War. Joseph Balicki escapes a prison camp and leaves a paper-knife shaped like a sword as a token; his children Ruth, Edek, and Bronia, later joined by the street boy Jan, travel west across occupied and ruined country toward Switzerland, where they hope to find their parents. Hunger, patrols, and chance helpers shape the road. The book is a children's wartime journey narrative, not a military history of the Eastern Front.
