Synopsis

This posthumous mythology of the First Age, edited from Tolkien's papers, opens with the creation of the world through music, then names the Valar and traces the awakening of Elves and Men. The central narrative follows Feanor's making of the Silmarils, the rebellion of the Noldor, and the long wars in Beleriand against Morgoth, with Beren and Luthien, Turin, and the fall of Gondolin among its episodes. Later sections recount the downfall of Numenor and the forging of the Rings of Power. It is a legendary history in linked tales, not a novel with one protagonist.
