Written in 1869 and later printed from the family manuscript, this memoir follows Lieutenant Richard Barter of the 75th Highlanders from the outbreak of the 1857 rebellion through the march on Delhi, the ridge camp, the breaching batteries, and the storming of the Kashmir Gate and the city streets. He records heat, cholera, sorties, and the conduct of British, Sikh, and rebel troops. Officers and men of the Delhi Field Force are the working cast. It is a junior officer's siege narrative, not a political history of the uprising.
