Jack Torrance, a struggling writer and recovering drinker, takes a winter caretaker post at the isolated Overlook Hotel in the Colorado mountains, bringing his wife Wendy and their son Danny, who has a telepathic gift. The empty resort, its boiler, and its recorded history of violence press on Jack as cabin fever and the building's influence work together. Danny sees things the adults cannot, and Wendy tries to hold the family together as her husband changes. The novel is a horror story of isolation and a haunted hotel, not a ghost-hunting procedural.
