This volume pairs Conrad's 1917 novella The Shadow-Line with the 1915 story collection Within the Tides. In the novella a young seaman takes his first command at Bangkok, inherits a neglected ship, and is tested by calm, fever, and a poisonous legacy from the dead captain, with the cook Ransome as his stay. The four accompanying tales (The Planter of Malata, The Partner, The Inn of the Two Witches, Because of the Dollars) turn on tropical trade, fraud, and coastal violence. Together they are sea fiction about crossing into responsibility, not a single continuous novel.
