In Barcelona in 1945, ten-year-old Daniel Sempere is taken by his father to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books and allowed to choose one volume: a novel by the vanished Julian Carax. As Daniel grows up, someone is hunting down and burning every other copy of Carax's work, and Daniel's search for the author's life draws in a beggar with a past, a blind Clara, the bookseller's assistant Fermin, and a policeman who uses the postwar city as his ground. The novel braids a coming-of-age story with a literary mystery in a city still under dictatorship.
