First published in 1860, this novel follows Helen Eskdale's marriage to the proud Lord Teviot. They enter the match half in love and half strangers, and the early months at his country house and in London society become a study of wounded pride, gossip, and the gap between public glitter and private chill. Helen's sister Grace, political friends, and neighboring families supply a second plot of courtship and party interest. The book is a comedy of manners about a marriage that must become a real attachment, not a sensation novel of bigamy or crime.
