In the Marcher manor of Caldicot at the turn of the thirteenth century, thirteen-year-old Arthur de Caldicot waits to become a squire and wonders who his parents really are. Merlin gives him a polished obsidian stone in which he watches another boy named Arthur grow toward kingship, so that harvest, a tournament, household tensions, and the threat of Welsh raids run beside the legendary court. The novel follows how the two boys' stories rhyme without becoming the same life, and how the manor's secrets press on the watching child. It is the opening volume of a historical fantasy set on the Welsh border, not a straight retelling of Malory.
