The Secret Sharer and Other Stories

Twixt Land and Sea, and Tales of Hearsay

By Joseph Conrad · 2003

Synopsis

This collection gathers later Conrad tales of ships, islands, and hearsay. The title story follows a young captain in the Gulf of Siam who hides Leggatt, a fugitive mate who has killed a man, in his cabin and feels the stranger as a second self. Companion pieces commonly include A Smile of Fortune, about a Mauritius trading call and a girl in a walled garden, and Freya of the Seven Isles, a love story wrecked by a Dutch officer's jealousy, with shorter pieces of war, Poland, and the sea. The volume is a set of independent stories, not a novel and not a single voyage narrative.
