First published in 1911, this children's novel follows Mary Lennox, a sour orphan sent from India to her uncle's house on the Yorkshire moors. She finds a walled garden locked since a death, and with the servant girl Martha's brother Dickon and her invalid cousin Colin she works the soil, opens the door, and draws the boy back toward walking and the household back toward ordinary feeling. The manor, the moor, and the hidden beds are the setting. The book is a story of recovery through a garden, not a horticultural manual.
