The Second World War and Its Aftermath

By A.J.P. Taylor · 2008

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

First published in 1975, this history covers the European and wider war from 1939 into the late 1940s, treating the German offensives, the Eastern Front, the Western campaigns, and the diplomatic bargains among Hitler, Mussolini, Churchill, Stalin, and Roosevelt. Taylor then follows occupation, partition, and the first years of the postwar settlement. The argument is characteristically pointed about accident, bluff, and the limits of planning. Maps and campaign chapters carry the narrative. The book is a political-military survey of the war and its immediate sequel, not a soldier's memoir.
