The Screwtape Letters
With Screwtape Proposes a Toast
By C.S. Lewis · 2008
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1942, this book is a series of letters from Screwtape, a senior devil in the Lowerarchy, to his nephew Wormwood, a junior tempter assigned to a young Englishman. The uncle advises on prayer, churchgoing, wartime anxiety, family irritation, courtship, and the uses of pride and false humility, always from the view that the patient's soul is a prize. An inverted theology treats God as the Enemy and ordinary habits as battlegrounds. A later toast and prefatory matter frame the correspondence. The work is a satirical epistolary fable of temptation, not a manual of demonology.
