Issued in 1841, this historical novel is set in and around London at the time of the Gordon Riots of 1780. Barnaby Rudge, a simple young man devoted to his raven Grip, is drawn from a village household into the anti-Catholic mobs that burn Newgate and attack Catholic houses. Around him run the locksmith Gabriel Varden, the Maypole inn, the secret of a long-ago murder, and the crossed loves of Emma Haredale and Edward Chester. Dickens pairs a private mystery of parentage and violence with a public explosion of riot. The book is both a family story and an account of a city giving itself to the crowd.
