Synopsis

This novel continues a war for the Iron Throne after Robert Baratheon's death. In King's Landing the boy Joffrey rules while Cersei Lannister and the new Hand Tyrion try to feed and hold the capital. Robb Stark campaigns in the riverlands; Stannis and Renly Baratheon each claim the crown; Balon Greyjoy sends ironborn against the north; and Daenerys Targaryen travels the eastern cities with her young dragons. The chapters move among these households and their servants, soldiers, and spies. The book is an ensemble epic of war and politics, not a single-hero quest.
