Synopsis
This history follows the European partition of Africa from the 1870s to the eve of the First World War. Pakenham moves among Leopold's Congo, the Berlin conference, the British and French advances on the Nile and in West Africa, the German colonies, the Boer War, and the last independent holdouts. Explorers, concessionaires, soldiers, and African rulers are the principal actors. Motives of trade, prestige, and missionary work sit beside the violence of conquest. The book is a narrative of the land grab, not a colonial administrative handbook.
