Roxana
The Fortunate Mistress; or a History of the Life and Vast Variety of Fortunes of Mademoiselle De Beleau, Afterwards Call'd the Countess De Wintselsheim, in Germany. Being the Person Known by the Name of the Lady Roxana, in the Time of King Charles II
By Daniel Defoe · 2010
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1724, this novel is the first-person account of a woman who, abandoned in England with children, becomes a kept mistress in France and London in order to survive and then to grow rich. She takes the name Roxana, learns the manners of courts and counting-houses, and bargains with lovers, a Dutch merchant, and a devoted maid, Amy. Fear of exposure, especially when a daughter reappears, presses against her wish to keep the fortune and the rank she has bought. The book is a criminal-and-commerce confession, not a romance of reform.
