First published in 1923, this novel follows Peyrol, an aging seaman and former rover of the eastern seas, who comes ashore at a farm on the Hyeres coast during the Napoleonic wars. The household includes Arlette, marked by Revolutionary violence, the blood-stained Jacobin Scevola, and a French naval officer who wants a tartane for a ruse against the British blockade. Peyrol's last act at sea is meant to serve the farm and the young pair. Coast, lagoon, and a small working boat are the setting. The book is a late tale of withdrawal and duty, not a pirate adventure for its own sake.
