The Rose and the Ring
A Fireside Pantomime for Great and Small Children
By W.M. Thackeray · 1964
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1855 as a Christmas book, this fairy tale follows two neighboring courts, Paflagonia and Crim Tartary. Prince Giglio is displaced by his uncle King Valoroso; Princess Angelica is vain; Princess Rosalba of Crim Tartary is lost and raised as a maid. The Fairy Blackstick gives a magic rose and a magic ring that make their wearers seem irresistible, and the tokens pass among the young people, a porter's son, and the court. Wars, banquets, and a final sorting of true worth follow. The book is a burlesque of fairy-tale monarchy, not a serious chronicle.
