Synopsis
After an unnamed catastrophe has burned the country, a father and his young son push a shopping cart south along ruined roads, sleeping in woods and empty houses, scavenging tins, and hiding from armed bands who hunt other survivors for food. They speak of carrying the fire and of whether they remain the good guys. The landscape is ash, cold, and collapsed towns; almost no names are given. Hunger, trust, and the next stretch of road are the only plot. The novel is a stripped post-disaster journey of two people, not a science-fiction explanation of how the world ended.
