First published in 1920, this novel follows Captain Tom Lingard, a country trader of the Eastern seas, who is helping the Malay prince Hassim and his sister Immada recover a usurped kingdom when an English yacht grounds on the coast. Among its party are Mr Travers, a politician on a pleasure cruise, and his wife Edith, whose presence pulls Lingard from the local alliance he has sworn to support. He hides the yacht people, bargains with coastal chiefs, and tries to serve two loyalties at once. The setting is the shallow seas and stockades of the Malay Archipelago. The book is a tale of divided duty, not a sequel that requires Conrad's earlier Lingard stories.
