First published in 1893, this memoir records William Forbes-Mitchell's service with the 93rd Highlanders in the Indian Rebellion of 1857. He describes the march from Calcutta, the second relief of the Lucknow Residency under Sir Colin Campbell, the storming of the Sikandar Bagh, and the later taking of the city, then operations toward Cawnpore and the campaign that followed. The narrative stays with the ranks: heat, shot, looting, and the treatment of sepoys and civilians. Indian princes, British officers, and Highland soldiers are the principal figures. It is a soldier's account of one mutiny campaign, not a general history of British India.
