First published in 1922, this detective novel is set at Mark Ablett's country house, the Red House, during a house party. Mark's long-absent brother Robert arrives from Australia; a shot is heard; Robert is found dead in the office and Mark has vanished. Antony Gillingham, a chance visitor with a taste for observation, and his friend Bill Beverley take on the roles of Holmes and Watson, testing alibis, a secret passage, a vanished actor, and the habits of the household. The inquiry stays amateur and conversational. The book is a closed-circle country-house mystery, the author's only full-length detective story.
