An Eyewitness History of the British in India

By Various Contributors · 1999

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This anthology collects eyewitness writing about the British in India from the East India Company's early trade through colonial rule to independence in 1947. Letters, diaries, and official papers describe voyages, cantonments, civilian households, hunting, disease, wars, the 1857 uprising, and later political conflict, from soldiers and viceroys as well as residents who lived with Indian courts and servants. There is no single narrator. The book is a documentary history of the Raj in many voices, not a novel of one station and not a full history of India before the British.
