First published in 1915, this novel traces three generations of the Brangwen family on a Marsh farm in the English Midlands. Tom Brangwen marries the Polish widow Lydia Lensky; their daughter Anna marries the craftsman Will; their daughter Ursula grows through school, a first love with the soldier Anton Skrebensky, and a hunger for a life beyond the farm and the cathedral town. The book attends to work, marriage, and awakening across the late nineteenth century. It is a family novel of desire and change, not a tract and not a war story.
