First published in 1906, this novel follows Roberta, Peter, and Phyllis after their father is taken away and the family leaves London for a cottage near a Yorkshire railway. The children wave at trains, befriend the station porter Perks and an old gentleman on the 9.15, and intervene in accidents, a landslide, and the troubles of a Russian exile. Their mother's writing keeps the household going while the reason for the father's absence remains a mystery they try to solve. The book is a children's story of railway life and family loyalty, not a manual of trains.
