The Quiet American

By Graham Greene · 2001

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

First published in 1955, this novel is set in Vietnam during the French war against the Viet Minh. Thomas Fowler, a jaded British correspondent in Saigon, shares his life with Phuong and watches Alden Pyle, a young American attached to the economic aid mission, arrive with theories about a third force. The plot turns on a bombing in the city, on Fowler's rivalry with Pyle, and on how far a reporter may intervene. The book is a political love triangle in a colonial war, not a military history of Dien Bien Phu.
