Synopsis
First published in 1945, this novel is narrated by Fanny, who watches her cousin Linda Radlett grow up among the chaotic, hunting-mad Radletts at Alconleigh. Linda's pursuit of love takes her through a dull first marriage, an affair that carries her to the Continent, and a later attachment formed as Europe moves toward war. Uncle Matthew, Aunt Sadie, and the Hons' cupboard supply the family comedy; politics and refugee work enter as the 1930s darken. The book is a comic novel of English upper-class courtship and family, not a documentary of one historical household.
