First published in 1966, this history portrays the Western world in the decades before 1914 without treating those years as a mere prelude to war. Separate studies examine the English patriciate, the United States and imperialism, the Dreyfus affair in France, the Hague peace conferences, German militarism, the Socialist internationals, and the anarchist campaigns of assassination. Tuchman follows politicians, artists, and militants as they pursue privilege, reform, or overthrow. The book is a group portrait of a late Belle Epoque, not a military history of 1914-18.
