First published in 1857, this novel follows William Crimsworth, a young Englishman who refuses dependence on his manufacturer brother and takes a clerk's post, then leaves for Brussels to teach English in a boys' school. He observes the Catholic and Protestant classrooms, the directrice Zoraide Reuter, and Frances Henri, a lace-mender and pupil-teacher with whom he forms an attachment against the school's intrigues. The narrative is Crimsworth's own account of work, pride, and a modest marriage. The book is a novel of employment and courtship in Belgium, not a school story for children.
