The Prisoner of Zenda
Being the History of Three Months in the Life of an English Gentleman
By Anthony Hope · 1961
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1894, this adventure novel sends the English gentleman Rudolf Rassendyll to the fictional Central European kingdom of Ruritania, where he is the double of the soon-to-be-crowned King Rudolf. When the king is drugged and abducted by his brother Black Michael on the eve of the coronation, Rassendyll impersonates him to keep the throne, falling in love with Princess Flavia and facing Michael's henchman Rupert of Hentzau at the castle of Zenda, where the real king is held. The book is a romance of impersonation and honour, not a history of a real state.
