Barbarian Invasions of the Roman Empire

The Lombard Invasion 553-600

By Thomas Hodgkin · 2002

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

First issued between 1880 and 1899 as Italy and Her Invaders, this multi-volume history follows the late Roman and early medieval invasions of Italy from the age of Valentinian I to the death of Charlemagne. Hodgkin treats in turn the Visigoths, the Huns and Vandals, the Ostrogothic kingdom, Justinian's attempted restoration, the Lombard conquest and kingdom, and the Frankish interventions that produced a new imperial order. Campaigns, treaties, and church politics are narrated at length from the literary sources. It is a consecutive political and military history of Italy's invaders, not a social survey of the whole Roman world.
