First published in 1973, this novel presents itself as the narrator's abridgement of a Florinese romance by the invented S. Morgenstern. In the inner story, farm boy Westley loves Buttercup, is reported dead, and returns as the Dread Pirate Roberts to rescue her from Prince Humperdinck, who needs a bride for a war. He is joined, then opposed, then joined again by the swordsman Inigo Montoya and the giant Fezzik, while the Sicilian Vizzini, a torture chamber, and a chase through Guilder fill the plot. Frame chapters interrupt for cuts, asides, and family argument. It is a comic adventure romance about storytelling as much as true love.
