Synopsis
First published in 1934, this crime novel is narrated by Frank Chambers, a drifter who stops at a roadside diner near Los Angeles and begins an affair with Cora, wife of the older Greek owner Nick Papadakis. The pair plot to kill Nick and take the business, then face inquests, a lawyer's deals, and the wreckage of their own distrust. The setting is highways, the lunchroom, and California courts. The book is a first-person story of lust, murder, and legal trap, not a police procedural told from the detective's side.
