First published in 1883, this novel follows a talking wooden puppet carved by the poor craftsman Geppetto. Pinocchio runs away, is robbed by a Fox and a Cat, ignores the Talking Cricket, and is drawn to a puppet theatre and later to the Land of Toys, where idle boys become donkeys. A Fairy with turquoise hair offers him chances to change. The action moves through Tuscan roads, an inn, the sea, and a shark's belly as the puppet learns what a son owes a father. The book is a serial children's novel of disobedience and formation, not a short nursery tale.
