Synopsis
First published in 1890, this novel centres on Dorian Gray, a beautiful young man whose portrait, painted by Basil Hallward, begins to age and record his sins while Dorian himself stays unmarked. Lord Henry Wotton's talk of pleasure sends Dorian into the London half-world of theatres, opium rooms, and cruel experiments on friends, including the actress Sibyl Vane. The studio, the locked schoolroom, and fashionable drawing rooms are the chief settings. The book is a moral fantasy of a life and its image, not a biography of a painter.
