The Phantom of the Opera

By Gaston Leroux · 2019

Synopsis

First published in 1910, this novel is set in the Paris Opera, where singers, managers, and a mysterious Opera Ghost share a building of cellars, lake, and boxes. Christine Daae, a chorus singer, is tutored by a hidden voice she believes is the Angel of Music; her childhood friend Raoul de Chagny loves her and tries to learn the teacher's identity. The voice belongs to Erik, a disfigured, gifted man who lives under the house and demands a salary, Box Five, and Christine herself. Abductions, a fallen chandelier, and a chase through the underground follow. The book is a mystery-romance of the theatre, not a history of the Opera.
