Synopsis
This ancient Greek narrative, also called the Anabasis, is Xenophon's first-person account of the Ten Thousand, Greek mercenaries hired by Cyrus the Younger to seize the Persian throne. After Cyrus falls at Cunaxa, the Greek generals are trapped and murdered, and the army must elect new leaders, including Xenophon, and fight its way north through hostile country to the Black Sea. Rivers, snowbound passes, and bargaining with local rulers shape the retreat. The work is a soldier's history of a stranded expedition, not a general history of the Persian Empire.
