First published in 1961, this mystery begins when a dying priest leaves a list of names that later prove to belong to people who have died. Mark Easterbrook, a historian, and others trace the list to a former inn called the Pale Horse in the village of Much Deeping, where three women appear to offer death by occult means for a fee. The investigation asks whether witchcraft, coincidence, or a practical method of murder is at work. Village gossip and London rooms supply the evidence. The book is a detection novel about a murder-for-hire scheme, not a study of the occult.
