This narrative history follows the Ottoman state from Osman and the early Anatolian beylik through the conquest of Constantinople, the reign of Suleiman, and the empire's long contraction to the last sultans and the end of the dynasty. Kinross organizes the account around successive rulers and around wars with Europe, Persia, and later Russia, while also treating administration, the court, and reform attempts in the nineteenth century. The central problem is how a frontier principality became, then ceased to be, a power on three continents. The book is a political survey of one empire, not a social history of every province.
